Donaghmoyne Club History and Roll of Honour
Donaghmoyne Fontenoys GFC was founded in 1888 and has been the home to our national games in the parish ever since. Although success has been pretty scarce at the Senior grade for the club recently, Donaghmoyne holds a very proud history with many honours to its name both at Adult and Juvenile level.
1904-1914:
It was in the early 1900s where any major success came about for the club and major success it was with the club picking up 4 County Senior Championships in this decade in 1904/5/6 and again in 1912.
1920-1930:
This proved to be quite a quiet spell within the club more than likely due to the economic difficulties and unrest in the country at this time, which I’m sure was a big problem for many other clubs in the country at this time also.
1930-1940:
Things started to pick up in this decade and that proved divdends on the field as Donaghmoyne grasped a number of major honours which included back to back Senior Championships in 1934 and 1935, aswell as 3 Senior Leagues, 2 Intermediate Championships and also a Minor Championship in 1932.
1940-1950:
The success just kept on flowing for the Fontenoys and many more honours followed with 2 Senior Championships, 5 Senior Leagues and 2 Junior Championships proving to be the result of another successful decade.
1950-1960:
Another 4 Senior Leagues followed in the 50s aswell as an U16 League title. Success at the Adult Grade was starting to dry up, but the U16 League win was a sign of plenty to come in the future.
1960-1970:
The development and improvement in our Juvenile teams was starting to show and and U14 League and an U16 Championship within 2 years showed great prospect for this particular group of players. A Minor League win and a Reserve Championship in 1969 was also a much needed victory at Adult level for the club.
1970-1980:
An Intermediate League win in 1971 was the clubs only adult success in the 70s but Minor League Division 1 and 2 medals came in 1970 and 1976 respectively and also to U14 Leagues and an U15 League showed once again that our Juvenile club were taking lots of positive steps forward.
1980-1990:
Intermediate, Junior, Reserve, U21, Minor Leagues and also and U16 League and Championship Double followed in the 80s, giving great promise for our Senior team to come, but sadly they couldn’t turn it into Silverwear in this decade. But these wins were a sign of the great work being done in the club.
1990-2000:
An Intermediate Championship final win over Ballybay in 1996 was an overdue Senior Championship medal for the club, and with success continuing among the Juveniles, Donaghmoyne were once again starting to show great promise for the future.
2000-2010:
An Intermediate League win over local rivals Inniskeen was the only medal held by a Senior team in Donaghmoyne during this decade, however, during this decade the Juvenile front was once again building nicely and our teams were picking up numerous medals along the way.
2010-Present:
It is clear to be seen that the strong foundations being put in place in Donaghmoyne at Juvenile level are starting to pay off, with about 100 children between 5-10 years of age turning out each Saturday, with the majority of our Juveniles competing in semi-finals and finals year in year out, which has led to us competing at this highest stage at Minor and U21 level in recent years, this is starting to pay dividends at adult level with our Seniors having won the Intermediate Championship title for the first time in 20 years, on the way to reaching the Ulster Club Final. With a lot of great people doing mountains of work within the club at this time, we can safely say the future for Donaghmoyne Fontenoys is indeed very bright, and a club to watch out for in the years to come as it once again becomes increasingly competitive at all levels.
